Vampires Pretty Much Rule

30 May

Yeah, I’m totally not ashamed to say it, even though it seems like these days you should be. Or at least qualify it with, “Well, not pretty ones.” But honestly, I like pretty vampires, I like ugly vampires. I like vampires that have to kill to drink, and vampires that can take a little and send you on your way. Hell, I even like vampires that emo about their lives, so long as they do it in an entertaining way. I like pulpy vampires and I like pseudo-literary vampires. I like vampires that f#%k, and I like vampires that fight. (Not that the two are mutually exclusive– nor should they be.) Messy vampires, neat vampires, wasteful vampires (30 Days of Night!), vampires that stock up on humans like a squirrel hoarding nuts for winter.

draculacover1Oh, I have my favorites– obviously Dracula is King, and I have a zero tolerance policy for nice vampires. (YA and MG, okay, you get out of jail free on this one. That’s cool.) When I want a monster, I want a damn monster, and the more they enjoy it, the more I will.  But you get my point. The vampire is my favorite monster– and that’s saying quite a lot.

That said, I do not like badly written books about anything– and badly done vampire books upset me immensely. I do, however, like really, really crappy movies. Preferably with Mike Nelson involved, but you know, I’ll riff it myself if need be. Good vampire movies are the stuff of dreams.

So in the spirit of vampire love, on this extremely sunny day, allow me to present to you one of my Amazing Finds from this afternoon’s shopping trip. A bad-ass Dracula comic, in tiny little book form.

Now that, my friends, is a vampire. Hell yes.

Also, Jonathan Harker is a tool. It wanted saying.

Neat. Dracula looks like Vincent Price : )

Hell yeah. I had the Frankenstein comic from this series. Bad Asssss. Looked nothing like Karloff with a flat-top. Nice one.

Vampries rule, but I’m more of a reanimated corpse kind of guy.

Vampires do rule. Vampire obsession is going everywhere. Did you hear about the new vampire show that is starting in Israel? Seems interesting. http://www.iheartvampires.net/?p=318

Nat, he does! No wonder I wanna lick his face. Wait… is that weird… er…

Aaron, dude, I so need to find that! The zombies and werewolves are tied at a close second for me– I’m working on a zombie thing now, actually. You do have such excellent taste!

Emily, that sounds… weirdly awesome. Though the YA vampire stuff tends to be a little less murderous than I’d like, I’ve been convinced once or twice! Israeli vampires, that’s a spin I could be into. Thanks for stopping by and giving me a heads up!

Vampires were the first monsters I fell in love with, and yep, I love the pretty ones too.

Vampires are absolutely fascinating, in more ways than one. ;)

Have you ever read The Lost by Jonathan Aycliffe (aka Daniel Easterman)? I haven’t read much vampire fiction admittedly, but that book really impressed me. There’s a cracking audio version too if you like your stories read to you. I forget who the reader was now but he really brought it to life.

Cate, I hear that. I like the pretty ones because I don’t think the outside should reflect the inside. I give vampires credit for more deceptive capabilities than that!

Jodi, too true– vampire hypnotism is awesome. Especially when it’s Langella. I love that guy.

Mike, that is going on the list. I love listening to books, actually, I’ll look around and see if I can find that. I’ve started a lot of vampire fiction, but I don’t generally finish it, these days :/ (I did just read a cool YA one with a vamp. Kids have much cooler books than I did back in the, er, day.)

They DO rule, sparkle pollution be damned. We’re still struggling under the Victorian mindset over here, so I think vampires will be a guilty pleasure for a long long time.

That has a LOT to do with it, rather overtly in most cases. Good point!

If we just pretend the sparkles don’t exist, it’s all good. ;)

Ha – guess what I’ve been reading the past few days. Though it’s hard to focus on the vampirey goodness with Van Helsing speaking German all the time… /headdesk

I always loved vampires as a kid – though I’ll admit I loved everything supernatural. The Dutch horror/fantasy MG/YA market is pretty huge. Paul van Loon and Tais Teng were made of awesome.

I’m afraid any potential Fae Print sequels will commit the cardinal sin of having nice vampires, but I’ll try to make up for it by making them extra amusing? :D

HAHA Yeah, so much for the Dutch Doctor, right? Oh dear.

I probably should’ve said YA, MG, and CrackFic get out of jail free on that, come to think of it… ;)

Probably the most famous Dutch character in the history of spec-fic, and he’s exclaiming “Mein Gott!” at every turn. Sigh.

And yeah, I figure with all the shit I pulled in Fae Print, I’ll be able to get away with just about anything from this point on. No one’d take it seriously anyway!
