Possibly the Raddest Thing Ever

23 Jun

Well, okay, the raddest thing ever to me. Hey, you knew there’d be a qualifier.

I’m fond of having drawings of my characters, especially the ones that hang around for multiple books/stories. Oftentimes I do them myself, but frankly I’m not very good– I’ve not had an art class since my first year of college: 1998-99, and even then I wasn’t exactly the queen. (Evidence directly to your right. That’s as good as it gets, y’all.) Still, I end up doing it a lot, because as you’ve surely noticed by now I love shiny things, and use them regularly to keep me motivated/inspired.

But imagine if a professional artist got hold of a character for me. That’d be the raddest thing ever, wouldn’t it?

Exactly. Corinne Duyvis (and check out her blog here), also a writing buddy of mine, was awesome enough to do it. She drew Izzy Fenwick, my MC from the Audio File. Check it out here, and click the image for the full-sized, even radder version, then feel free to say nice things about Cory.

Extra awesome because Reenie (for those of you new to my ravings, the Resident Neuronaut thing refers to her– yes, that is a clever way of combining our affection for Freakangels and the fact that she’s actually a neuroscientist) always tells me it should be a graphic novel ala the fabulous Phonogram. And she’s probably right, if it’d look like this.

Also, if you’re in the Netherlands, Cory is going to be on Sterren op het Doek doing a portrait of Dutch football coach Foppe de Haan very soon. Check her out.

The world is so nice to me today! I love it! Thank you kindly for the pimping, I always appreciate it.

Dude… that’d be so cool. You think any agents would agree?

Fantastic, and I am supremely jealous. Off to draw stick images of my characters.

Here’s another lump of jealousy! Oooh, I would love to have some of my characters drawn – seeing them outside of my head would be so amazing.

Cory, I do, actually. I’ve been thinking about it since the project got a start, and Reenie said it. Of course, wishful thinking me, I’m going “god, that’d be so amazing… but I’d never know how to do it…”, because there’s nothing I’d love to do more, obviously.

As I get through these intermediate drafts, however, I’m realizing just how many of my major problems could be so elegantly solved by a graphic novel format– it’s a really visually oriented story, from the freaky Guide City to the confused visual metaphor of their brainsurfing.

I think I decided to seriously look into it, in spite of my insecurities, this week. Gonna ask all you artist types where I should begin. (Expect emails!)

Cate, I feel that! Yay for People Who Know How to Draw!

ETA: Emma, isn’t she great? (Cory AND Izzy.) Nothing like seeing them outside your head, I agree.

    Nice to meet you, too!

Well, hey, if I can help at all with either advice or art, I’d love to! Just shoot me an e-mail if you ever want me to pop on MSN or AIM to talk.

That’s an excellent pic! Cory is a very talented individual.

Very nice. I feel a lot of character in that character…for all the sense that made.

I know, right Mike? Don’t those people who are so freaking good at everything just make you… happy? :D

Aaron, it makes perfect sense. That’s precisely why I was so happy. My husband looked at it and said, “She looks like a turd… yep, that’s Izzy.” (That’s what he calls the cat when she misbehaves. And he’s read the book!)

Whenever I draw, it women with huge breasts and wonky arms. If any men start developing a fetish for that kind of thing, I’m going to make millions!

    Wow! She’s awesome!!

I suck at art, but I’d be happy to read stuff and gush over it. :)

    That’s cool!!

Natalie, I think there’s already a guy who does that: Rob Liefeld. He somehow makes a good living, so maybe you should illustrate your own graphic novels! (I’d buy Relentless Sodomy: The Musical: The Graphic Novel)

Megh, she is awesome! And I know you of all people know how cool it is when someone Gets It enough to do that. Wow.

Amanda, thank you for joining in my squeeing. <3
