WIP Workday

8 Jul

Been a big old slacker this week, which has been nice, thanks. Between the holiday weekend, lots of research reading, and a sudden bout of sickness, I’m afraid my WIP has suffered. And now this weekend I’m off to the beach.

Mmm, lazy.

But still, a few little scenes have taken shape. And so progress on my WIP The Resurrectionists, a f@$ed up zombie love story from 1820s Philadelphia, stands about here:

14198 / 80000 words. 18% done!

Here’s a bit from the last scene I wrote, wherein we see three well-dressed young medical students in a back alley of ill fame.

Paul asked, “Is she…?”

Tom strode to her side, his boots clicking with military regularity over the dirty cobblestone. “As a doornail, as the expression goes.”

Dart crouched beside the dead girl, upsetting an empty bottle at her side in his haste–or perhaps the ale had made him unsteady. He took her bare wrist in one hand, and after a moment pronounced, “Probably been here a few hours.” Then he looked up at Tom. “Quite a discovery.”

“Fortune has smiled on my little enterprise, and about bloody time.” Tom crouched at her other side. “Paul, get under her other arm. Dartmoor–”

Dart stood and began toward the end of the alley. “Yes, I’ll keep watch. Best that we pose as a party of inebriated young louts. That should be simple enough.”

Paul wasn’t certain if he regretted not drinking more this evening, or wished he had drunk less. He looked from one friend to the other, both surprised and confused by how easily they put aside their differences, not to mention good sense, when it came to matters of resurrection.

…lazy girl. Ha! That’s pretty funny coming from me.

I really loved the scene. That all flows really well. Hope that you’ll share more is it progresses.

Katey, I just love the way you string together phrases like: “not to mention good sense, when it came to matters of resurrection”

    Delicious.

Keep her lit, as my friend always says by way of encouragement. Not sure what it means but it sounds good and positive.

A day at the beach – nice. What I’d give for warmer weather.

Don’t forget to include me in your beta readers when you’ve finished this thing. I’d love to read it.

Thanks, Jamie! It’s been fun so far, anyhow.

Alan, I love me some laziness. Thanks a lot for humoring me. There’s something motivational about knowing Wednesday is coming and I haven’t written enough to make a respectable showing :D

Aaron, you are too kind! Oh snark of the 1820s, you light up my life.

Nat, or not, as it were!

Mike, is your friend from Appalachia? That sounds like something we’d say…

Guess you’ll have to wait ’til we’re done with the warmth to get it back, huh BT? Thanks a lot for that offer, I’m definitely going to take you up on it. Too kind!

I love how you keep the scene moving with both dialogue and action – this is most definitely a keeper.

    Enjoy the beach.

    Sounds good. Ready for more!

Cate, thank you for that, big time. I’ve been actively trying to learn how to do that very thing with dialogue, since it’s always been a weak spot of mine.

Jeremy, that’s sweet of you! I’m ready for more too. Now if I’d just sit down and do it… eh, after the beach :D

You can be as lazy as you want until the 17th. Then your crashing a funeral.

Really, you couldn’t make up this stuff….

Even *I’m* creeped out by that! But yes. Soon.

Katey, have you found that blogging about your writing progress and/or including excerpts from your work helps motivate you to keep writing? Does a public forum put more pressure on you continue when you might otherwise slack off?

Just curious, since I look for any excuse not to write myself.

    Hi Rish!

Yeah, the only other time I’ve done it was during Nano, and that’s pretty motivational in itself, but I found my misery loved the company. (I think most writers must feel that way, yeah? We spend so much time alone with our head people.)

This time around, with no end date in sight and no set goals, I do think it’s helpful so far. If I find I don’t have much to show for a week on a Tuesday night, I’ll go and write up a few scenes that’ve been sitting in back of my brain.

Hm, now you’ve made me want to do an experiment. We should collect data on this subject.
