Rock N Roll Is Our Epiphany
12 Oct
It’s remarkable how many spam comments I have to filter after a few days away from my computer. Half of them are in Russian, and half of them are ads for erectile dysfunction meds. Not sure how they think that relates to this blog… unless it’s Russian vampires with ED?
Hm, maybe not.
So I’m home, and happy. So, so happy. Why, you ask?
1. Just before I left, I went to the Arlington County Public Library (which is the shit, by the way), and grabbed a ton of books on watchmaking, clocks, etc. They were very heavy, but I eventually got them up to my apartment, and proceeded to devour one of them that night.
2. On the train to NYC, I wrote a couple thousand words on the story that forced me to research something so, er, useless in my every day life. (What have I ever researched that was useful, in the strictest sense, I wonder? Hmm, 1820s American popular songs? The life and times of Franz Liszt? Obscure battles of the Revolutionary War? Nepalese temples? In that light, watch construction and restoration suddenly looks practical.)
3.
Love. Pure unadulterated love.
4. True Blood. Finally got through a large chunk of the first season (I saw some of the second this year and loved it, but didn’t want to spoil the surprise!) since Reenie owns it. It’s so ridiculously fun. I can’t decide if I want to eat Sookie or Bill first. Yum. Is there a better way to spend a day than watching vampires for six hours, then going to see the Happy Mondays? Well, maybe, but you’d be hard pressed to accomplish it.
So now I need to wrap up this story and complete research and all. But I do think I’ve caught up with blog posts– which is always the first order of business since I’m bound to miss exciting events. Which I did, but it was for a good cause, and here I am, actually about to finish a short story for the first time in, er, forever. As a consequence, I gotta delay my usual spec-fic-athon a little more– but I plan on setting it up tomorrow or the day after at the latest.
Not that it matters. But I like to be consistent, is the thing.
Also, today is my kid brother’s birthday. Yay, Nicolas!

That’s some heavy reading. I always feel inadequate on the research front when I read how much work you put into it.
Reading the marquee before entering a show is one of the best feelings ever. Nice way to capture it right there!
Cate, it’s all very misleading. In truth I was just the kid who’d hear a strange concept or word and amuse myself by reading the encyclopedia entry about it. This has always been my idea of a good time, because I’m spectacularly nerdy.
I just figure I might as well make use of it and put it in the stories.
Barry, no doubt about it. I was kinda happy with the strange glow, too, since that’s sort of how it feels, isn’t it?
I get female porn stars wanting to contact me on Twitter, myspace etc. I don’t know what about my profile screams “horny lesbian,” but what can you do? ; )
Nat – pass them onto me – I’ll sort them out for you (rolls up sleeves).
Katey – True Blood – love it, love it, love it! I was given an advance copy before season 1 was released on Fox in Australia. It was direct from the studio and had little directions in it where scenes were missing and still needed to be shot. Not much fun when you get to an exciting bit and then this black board comes up telling you ‘insert memory flashback here’ – still it was enough to get me hooked. I’ve seen the first two seasons twice now.
I like Bill, but I’d have to stick with eating Sookie first…the amount of Australian’s in it is also amazing – the Oz connections just keep popping up.
Yes, would our day be complete without a penis enlargement email in our inbox. I have the Sookie Stackhouse books in my TBR pile.
Happy b-day kid bro. I get some mean spam, too. *censored here, of course*
Nat, looks like BT is here to solve your issues! That said, I’m not sure what it is a bout you, but if you could bottle and sell it, bet you’d make a million.
BT yeah, Aussies and Kiwis like whoa. (Reenie’s a Kiwi, so you know, we were on that.) Like watching Hercules all over again. (Er, sort of.) The show is so much fun– even with certain key scenes missing, the awesome would be undeniable. So cool!
Danielle, too true– we might start to feel neglected without it, huh? I haven’t read any of the books, but I might have to make it a point now. Death and sex– sign me up!
Aaron, like she says, how would our day be complete without it? And yeah, my brother is getting old. Don’t want to think about what that makes me.
Wow, that technical reading must be really ‘dry’. Guess that it’s a necessary evil.
It’s surprisingly interesting. I’ve never really understood clockwork in all its weird permutations, but I think it’s mesmerizing, and always wanted to understand. I don’t yet, and that’s kind of exciting.
I mean, almost anything can be interesting if you get involved, can’t it?
I did mention I’m a nerd, right? Gah. Lame!
