Speaking of creepy, happy birthday!

19 Jan

I’d be remiss if I didn’t take a second to say happy birthday to one of my favorite dudes today, Edgar Allan Poe. Mary Rajotte has a piece up at Examiner.com about the various celebrations going on here and there, and a poll for your favorite story. (Come on, Cask of Amontillado!) A more emo write-up over at The Writer’s Almanac, too

He’s one of those writers that after I finish a story, I both despair of ever writing anything powerful, and really, really want to get started trying. As in, right that second. Anyhow, here’s a page out of a cool graphic novelization I have of The Fall of the House of Usher, adapted by P. Craig Russell and Jay Geldhoff, just because it’s awesome:

Thanks for the shout-out! That looks super cool – I need some Poe graphic novels! I love ‘Usher’ – that intro paragraph just draws me in every time.

I know, right? I just like the pile of skulls as the backdrop for that page. I found a couple of them, this one and some illustrated poems, on a rack of “Classics Illustrated” at this crazy old comic shop in Old Town Alexandria. So much goodness!

Poe and pictures…I love you, graphic novel.

Seriously, Nat. They must’ve had MC Escher consulting.

    Aaron, my thoughts exactly!

Back when I was in college, I discovered that occasionally, at the end of the year, profs would clean out their offices and leave the books in the hall for all and sundry.

I scored a really cool collected Poe off that – I think it was a turn-of-the-century edition, and utterly beat to shit. Just the way it ought to be. :)

Hey, I have that in the school library!

I will have a drink in Poe’s honour. I don’t have any cognac on hand, but perhaps a single malt will suffice. Cool graphic.

Mmm old books. Megh, that’s a hell of a find. Professors are dumb sometimes, but who cares when we get rich off it!

Sue, that’s why you’re the coolest librarian ever. Well that and you write about mutants and zombie elves.

Alan, I know, cognac is getting WAY expensive these days too. I heard there isn’t enough to meet the rising yuppie demand :/ Hope the single malt was good to you, though!
