Family Film Night — Recs Needed!

6 Jul

No, not my family, but my little vampire family. Oh, they’ll grow and grow as time goes by, but for now I refer specifically to the lovely fellows I’ve introduced in the past month, Liam and Gianni. Some of you who’ve been long tortured by this blog may recall their Vampire Awareness Month movie commentaries from two years past. I’ve decided that since I’m in a vampirey mood I’m going to watch a bunch of vampy films and have my own little Vampire Awareness Month.

And who better to do the commentary than my dudes, Liam and G?

Okay, so that’s misleading. The truth is that I am incapable of watching a vampire movie without these two going off in my brain on loudspeaker. Might as well blog about it, since their time has finally begun. (About time they were useful. Hmph.)

So I’m asking for recs. I’ve already decided to do Thirstwhich I watched recently, Mark of the Vampire, which is the best Lugosi vampire flick ever, and maybe some stuff about Being Human and True Blood just to change things up with a little TV in the mix, but I need some other good movies I haven’t seen before–or haven’t seen in a long time. If you have any ideas, please leave a comment for me! I want somewhere between 4-8 I guess, so loads of room for stuff. Here are the ones they already did:

  • Part 5: 30 Days of Night, Let the Right One In, Twilight
  • Part 4: Cronos, Interview with the Vampire, Shadow of the Vampire
  • Part 3: The Night Stalker, Vampire Hunter D, The Lost Boys, Near Dark
  • Part 2: Martin, Dracula (1979), The Hunger
  • Part 1: Nosferatu, Dracula (1931), Brides of Dracula

If you have anything else for them, please let me know.

Razor Blade Smile. I luv this one, and not just because the bloodsuckers are so delightfully dirty (although, yeah, that’s probably part of it).

Ooooh that sounds like fun–and I’ve never seen it before! Thanks, Pat.

What about Buffy the Vampire Slayer? The movie is delightfully cheese-tastic. Paul Reubens’s extended death scene during (or just after, I forget which now) the credits is worth the price of admission alone. And then of course there’s the TV show.

Also, there’s Fright Night (two versions, although the 2011 one has David Tennant in it) and Blade I and II.

OMG yes, I definitely need to do both Fright Nights, good call. Also the Blade movies (esp since Blade is actually mentioned in the book–Liam’s little bro is a huge Blade fan :D)

Also: Buffy! I loved that movie. Haven’t seen it since college!

Thanks, Becky. The list, she grows <3

    Katey,
    Here’s my list:

Let The Right One In – swedish vampire movie. Loved It
    After Dark = a classic
    The Lost Boys
    Bram Stroker’s Dracula
    Dracula with Frank Langella (sigh)
Roman Polanski’s The Fearless Vampire Killers

Those are my top favorites. And Let The Right One In has the best cat attack scene ever. They remade it the next year in the US. I can’t remember the name off hand but it never beat the original.

Oh man, awesome–and actually reads a lot like a list of my all-time faves (if you add 30 Days of Night, which takes my cake like whoa). They’ve already done all of those except the Polanski, which is now on the list. Thank you <3

(PS: If you love Langella Dracula, you will enjoy my Gianni. This pleases me immensely.)

And then there is always The Little Vampire!
and of course, Vampire Hunter D:Bloodlust

    • Katey July 7, 2012 at 5:31 pm #

Oh yeah, they should TOTALLY do Bloodlust since they did the first one. The Little Vampire is a great option too. G’s totally creeped out by children. :D

“Daybreakers” was surprisingly good with its unique take on the mythos. As for other scifi-vamp movies, you have “Underworld” and all of its sequels, “Ultraviolet,” and “Priest.” These last three fall more into the category of Action-Horror in the way “Blade” does, but still all fangy.

Titles unmentioned… “Salem’s Lot” from Stephen King, “Dracula 2000″ by Wes Craven, and “Vampires” by John Carpenter.

    • Katey July 8, 2012 at 3:01 pm #

I haven’t even seen Daybreakers, so that has to go on the list. I thought about Underworld–those were pretty fun to watch, so that could be interesting. I heard Priest was terrible, so I’m definitely putting that on the list–mockery ftw!

I loved Dracula 2000, too. How did I not think of that?! Thank you, Brian!

My suggestions are already on your list. I love, love, love The Lost Boys, Nosferatu and Let The Right One In.

Three of my all time fave movies of ANY variety, right there!

Have you ever seen Last Man on Earth with Vincent Price? It’s based on Richard Matheson’s I Am Legend and came before The Omega Man and the Will Smith version. I like all three films but that’s kind of a neat one. Also, Blacula might be fun.

    • Katey July 12, 2012 at 6:27 pm #

I have seen Last Man on Earth–that’s a really, really good idea. All three are, actually. Thanks, Carole <3

OK, lets throw some wonderful female vampires out there too:

    The Vampire Lovers
    Carmilla
    Queen of the Damned
    Black Sunday
    Vampyros Lesbos

All strong and mostly lesbian vampires
    Just to change things up.

I love it, Melanie! Liam in particular is very, very happy about this list. And he would even have read Carmilla so–bonus points!
